HEALTH AND WELLNESS Did you know the we offer over 120 group wellness classes in a week? The La Crosse Area Family offers a wide variety of wellness programs and classes to help you reach your health & wellness goals! These offerings include, personal training, fitness assessments, group exercise classes, nutrition counseling and more. The YMCA reserves the use of our wellness centers and group exercise classes for individuals age 14 and up. Each YMCA has a Wellness Center that is fully-equipped with a variety of cardio equipment along with a 13-piece Cybex strength training circuit and free weight area. The Wellness Centers offer wellness floor supervisors which are available any time of the day to provide assistance and answer your questions. Beginners, we want you to succeed with your new health & wellness program! This is why we have free orientations with our wellness center floor supervisors. They will set you up on a routine so you are getting the most out of your workouts, safely and efficiently. Simply call the Member Services Desk or stop in the Wellness Center to set up an appointment.
IMPORTANT: All youth under the age of 18 years that
are allowed into these areas should have their YMCA membership card
punched for easy access. Group Exercise classes such as Step, Yoga, Water Exercise, Group Cycling and much more are included in the monthly membership fee for Adult, Family and Youth Wellness Members. Evaluate YMCA group wellness classes and instructors Group Exercise Certifications Have you ever thought about becoming a Group Exercise Lead Instructor? Group Exercise Instructors come from all backgrounds and experience levels. To become an instructor it does take some hard work and dedication but it is very rewarding.
How would I get started? First talk with one of our YMCA Health and Wellness Directors as they can give you advice and point you in the right direction. You should also try out our group exercise classes and find your niche. Get good at taking classes first! Remember most classes you teach will require a group exercise certification as well as time spent practicing routines.
What type of certifications do we host at the La Crosse Area Family YMCA? We offer these certifications from the YMCA of the USA at least once a year: Healthy Lifestyle Principles (prerequisite to all other YMCA certifications) Foundations of Group Exercise (prerequisite to all other YMCA certifications) Cardio and Step Instructor Certification

NEW! YMCA Group Exercise Instructor Training and Development Program
Have you ever thought about becoming a Group Exercise Instructor and did not know where to get started? The La Crosse Area Family YMCA has started a Group Exercise Instructor Training and Development Program to help you succeed. This program consists of: Classroom hours, mentor meetings, assistant instructor hours, and fitness studio time. By the end of our 3 month program you will learn musicality, choreography and teaching basics for specific class(es) of interest. You will be able to teach class portions and get direct feedback from the mentor instructor(s) you work with each week. Most importantly, the classroom sessions will help you gain the necessary background and knowledge of exercise and sport science. Classroom topics will cover YMCA Certification material and you will receive three YMCA nationally recognized certifications: Healthy Lifestyle Principles, Foundations of Group Exercise, and Cardio & Step Instructor Certification. Remember that there is no specific major/background that is required. We are looking for individuals with passion, excitement, people skills, basic knowledge of group fitness, and a dedication to our YMCA core values. What does this program offer? Nutrition counseling: A 1 hour initial consult allows you to meet with a registered dietician and with you they will assess your unique nutritional needs. With this assessment, a personalized nutrition plan will be developed to help maximize your efforts and to help reach your goals. A 30-minute follow-up consultation is designed to help maintain and fine tune the goals set at the initial consult. It also offers an opportunity to reassess your nutritional needs. In most cases, a follow-up is recommended.

and questions. Winning Weighs is a group weight management class in partnership with Gundersen Lutheran. Please see our program guide for offerings and information. Moms in Motion is our prenatal and postpartum exercise program that is led by certified fitness professionals and incorporates aerobic exercise, muscle conditioning, stretching and relaxation. We ensure a safe and comfortable workout for women in all stages of pregnancy and for all levels of fitness. We also include exercises that are of more importance during and after pregnancy along with supplying you with educational material. Our goal is to continue to modify your exercise program so that you can continue to exercise throughout your entire pregnancy. The best part, of course, is meeting other moms! WOW! Women On Weights is a 6-week program that will teach women various strength training exercises and techniques. This program is taught in a small group setting allowing the instructor to give each participant individual attention. Wellness Center
Teen Strength Training class introduces teens to our Wellness Center and the basic principles of strength training. Participants will learn how to properly use our NEW! Cybex circuit as well as free weights, stability medicine balls and cardio equipment. Our instructors teach proper form and technique, lead discussions about various health and fitness topics and provide a safe and fun experience. All participants must be at least 12 years old and will be allowed to use the Wellness Center on their own upon completion of this program.
Group Strength Training – for Girls class is specifically designed for teenage girls ages 12-18. This class introduces teens to our Group Strength Training Class and our Wellness Center . Emphasis will be placed on learning the basic principles of strength training, including proper form and technique, along with addressing other various health and fitness topics while in a safe and fun environment. Our goals are to increase muscle coordination, strength, and endurance, but to also increase girls’ self-perception of themselves and their abilities to interact in a weight room setting.
NEW! Youth Group Exercise Classes Fall 2007 We will be offering teen exercise classes between the hours of 3-5pm- afterschool –on our regular Group Exercise Schedule. These classes will range from 2-4 days per week and will include cardio, cycling, strength training, mind/body, and dance exercise classes. All classes are located in the Fitness Studio unless noted and for TEENS ONLY.
Youth Age Limits To enter the Wellness Center or attend a Group Exercise class youth need to be 14 years or older. All youth that have passed our teen strength training class and are under the age of 14 are allowed to use our Wellness Centers. IMPORTANT: All youth under the age of 18 years that are allowed into these areas should have their YMCA membership card punched for easy access.
We are currently working on after school exercise programs within our School Age Care System. We continue to search new avenues in order to better serve the community’s youth population . We would love to hear your ideas, suggestions, and comments which can be directed towards the Health and Wellness Directors.
